The rug size guide for Indian homes

Exact sizes in feet for living rooms, bedrooms and dining spaces — and the placement rules that make a room look finished.

The most common rug mistake in Indian homes isn’t colour — it’s buying one size too small. A rug that floats in front of the sofa like an island makes even a large room feel improvised. Get the size right and everything on it looks intentional.

Living room

5×8 ft — compact seating (a 3-seater + one chair): front legs of the sofa on the rug. 6×9 ft — the safest all-rounder for the typical 10×12 to 12×15 ft Indian living room. 8×10 ft — large sectionals or open-plan halls, with every furniture leg on the rug. Leave 12–18 inches of visible floor between rug edge and wall.

Bedroom

Place the rug perpendicular under the lower two-thirds of the bed so it lands soft on both sides where your feet do. Queen bed → 6×9 ft; king → 8×10 ft. On a budget, a pair of 2×5 ft runners along each side gives the same barefoot comfort for less.

Dining

The rug must be large enough that chairs stay on it when pulled out — add roughly 24 inches beyond the table on every side. A 6-seater table usually needs 8×10 ft.

Three mistakes to avoid

The postage stamp (a 4×6 ft rug in front of a big sofa) · matching the rug to the curtains instead of grounding the seating · ignoring pile height where doors open — measure your door clearance before buying a hand-tufted rug with a tall pile.

SOISU’s hand-tufted rugs come in multiple sizes per design with freight included in the price — or send SOI a photo of your room and let her suggest the size and style that fits it.
