Carpets — SOISU Home Decor India
Rugs anchor a room. The right one settles a sofa, a coffee table and a side chair into a single conversation. We size for the Indian living room — 6 × 9 ft under a sofa and coffee table, 8 × 10 ft for an open-plan room.
Italian elegance, Scandinavian softness, Japanese restraint — translated into hand-tufted and hand-knotted construction by Indian carpet workshops with three generations of skill.
Choosing a carpet size for Indian living rooms
Size is the decision people get wrong most. In a typical Indian living room, the rug should sit under at least the front legs of the sofa and span most of the seating group — a 5 × 8 ft works for a compact apartment layout, 6 × 9 ft for a standard 3-seater plus chairs, and 8 × 10 ft for larger rooms. A rug that floats small in the middle makes the whole room look under-furnished.
Construction: machine-loomed vs hand-tufted
SOISU carpets are power-loomed for consistency and value, and hand-tufted where the design calls for texture and depth. Power-loomed polyester-cotton and wool-blend pile gives an even, hard-wearing surface that suits high-traffic Indian homes; hand-tufted construction adds a softer, plusher hand for bedrooms and quiet corners. We describe each piece in plain language — pile, construction and care — so you know exactly what you're buying.
Material & climate
For humid and coastal cities, a low-pile, tightly-constructed carpet resists moisture and is easier to keep dust-free than a deep shag. Wool blends are warm and resilient; polyester-cotton blends are budget-friendly and stain-tolerant. In monsoon-heavy regions, choose lower pile and air the rug periodically to prevent damp.
Care & pets
Vacuum on low suction (no beater bar on looped pile), rotate every few months for even wear, and spot-clean spills immediately with a damp cloth rather than rubbing. Low-pile, tightly-woven carpets handle pets and high traffic best — long shaggy pile traps hair and is harder to clean.
Frequently asked about carpets
What size carpet is right for an Indian living room?
Place the rug under at least the front sofa legs and across the seating group: 5 × 8 ft for compact apartments, 6 × 9 ft for a standard 3-seater with chairs, and 8 × 10 ft for larger rooms. Avoid a small rug floating in the centre.
What is the difference between a carpet and a rug?
The terms are used interchangeably in India. 'Rug' usually means a smaller, movable floor piece and 'carpet' a larger area piece, but both describe the same category — woven floor coverings. SOISU lists them together.
What is the best carpet for Indian humidity and monsoon?
A low-pile, tightly-constructed carpet resists moisture, dust and damp better than a deep shag. Air it periodically during monsoon and keep pile low in coastal and humid cities.
What is the best carpet for homes with pets?
Low-pile, tightly-woven carpets handle pets and high traffic best — they trap less hair and are easier to spot-clean. Vacuum on low suction and clean spills immediately with a damp cloth.
Are SOISU carpets hand-tufted or machine-made?
Both, depending on the design — power-loomed for even, hard-wearing surfaces and value, hand-tufted where a softer, plusher texture is wanted. Each product page states the construction and pile in plain language.
