Throws and Bed Runners: How to Use Them.
A throw or bed runner is the quickest way to add colour and texture to a sofa or bed. Here is where they go, what size to choose and how to style them through the Indian year.
The easiest way is to fold the throw lengthwise into thirds and hang it over one arm of the sofa, or across one corner of the seat back. For a relaxed look, hold it at the centre, drop it loosely over one end and let it fall unevenly. For a neater look, fold it into a long band and lay it across the back cushions or the seat. Avoid spreading a throw flat over the whole sofa, which looks like a protective cover. Pick the arm furthest from the entrance so it is seen as you walk in. One throw per sofa is usually enough.
Tuck one end of the throw firmly behind or under a seat cushion, which anchors it while the rest drapes freely. Throws slide most on leather, faux leather and smooth, tightly woven sofa fabrics, especially when people sit and get up often. Folding the throw into a thicker band also adds weight, which helps it stay put over an arm. Heavier, textured throws grip better than light, silky ones. If it still moves, a small strip of non-slip rug underlay placed under the draped section works well and stays hidden. In homes with children or pets, a throw folded neatly across the back is easier to keep in place than one draped over an arm. Our guide to layering textures in a room shows other ways to use throws.
For an Indian King bed of 72 inches (about 183 cm) wide, a runner of about 210–245 cm long works well, as it covers the top and drops down both sides. The common guideline is to allow around 15–30 cm of overhang on each side, depending on the depth of your mattress and whether the bedding hangs over the edges. A runner that stops at the mattress edge looks short. Width is a matter of taste, but 45–90 cm is typical; wider runners read more like a throw. SOISU throws and runners are mostly long formats of around 210–245 × 64–94 cm, which suit King beds. See the throws collection.
Yes, a throw works very well on a leather sofa, softening its look and making it warmer to sit on. Leather can feel cold in air-conditioned rooms and sticky in humid months, and a throw across the seat or back solves both. Choose a textured or matt throw to contrast with the smooth, shiny leather. Warm neutrals, rust, olive and cream sit well with tan and brown leather, while grey, ivory and ink blue suit black leather. A throw with a little grip will slide less on leather than a very smooth one. Tuck one end lightly behind a seat cushion to hold it in place.
Choose a throw that picks up one colour already in the room, usually from your cushions or rug. The simplest approach is to treat the throw as one of your accent colours, so it ties the sofa or bed into the rest of the room. On a neutral sofa, a throw in a deeper shade such as rust, olive or indigo adds warmth. On a patterned or strongly coloured sofa, a calm neutral throw works better. A throw with a subtle stripe or border can link two colours at once. Avoid a throw that introduces a completely new colour unless you repeat it somewhere else.
Yes, a long bed runner can be used as a table runner on a dining table, console or sideboard, provided the length suits the surface. A runner of 210–245 cm fits a six- or eight-seater dining table, with some drop at each end. On shorter tables, fold it under at the ends or let it hang lower. Keep in mind that a runner used on the dining table will face spills, so choose one that is easy to wash and protect it with a glass or a set of placemats during meals. It also works well as a festive cover on a low table or diwan.
Use throws for decoration and light warmth through most of the year, and for real cosiness in North Indian winters. In summer, keep one lightweight throw folded on the sofa arm or bed foot purely for colour. In the monsoon, swap to darker or patterned throws that hide damp-weather marks, and air them regularly so they do not smell. From October to February, add a warmer throw on the sofa for evenings and one on the bed for AC or winter nights. Store off-season throws clean and fully dry. One throw per sofa or bed is usually enough, and two at most in a larger room. A single throw adds colour and texture without making the room look cluttered. In a big living room with two sofas, you might place one throw on each, in related colours. On a bed, a runner plus a folded throw can work together if they share a colour. More than that tends to look untidy, especially in Indian homes where shawls and blankets are already in daily use. Keep extras in a basket or trunk nearby for cool evenings.
Not quite: a throw is a loose piece of fabric meant to be draped or used for warmth, while a bed runner is a narrower band laid flat across the foot of a bed for decoration. In practice, many long textiles work as both. A long format of around 210–245 cm by 64–94 cm can be folded over a sofa arm as a throw or laid across a King bed as a runner. The difference is mostly how you style it. Runners stay flat and neat; throws look best relaxed and slightly rumpled.
